Linus Tech Tips, the most-watched tech channel on YouTube, has been hacked and used to promote scams, including a “Special Crypto Giveaway” featuring Elon Musk. The channel’s 15 million subscribers could not access the track for several hours, leaving many wondering what had happened.

The hack is part of a trend of crypto-related hacks and phishing scams on YouTube, which have increased due to a lack of security measures. Hackers often use popular channels to promote hoaxes and phishing attacks, taking advantage of the channel’s large following and influence.

While the reasons behind the Linus Tech Tips hack are still unclear, some on Crypto Twitter have speculated that it was a publicity stunt by Linus Sebastian himself. This speculation has not been confirmed by either YouTube or Linus Tech Tips, and what happened remains to be seen.

The incident has drawn criticism of YouTube for not doing enough to prevent phishing scams. The lack of security measures on the platform has allowed hackers to easily take advantage of popular channels and promote scams to unsuspecting viewers.

This is not the first time that hackers have targeted Linus Tech Tips. In 2019, the channel was hacked, and over 25TB of data was stolen. This incident highlights the need for improved security measures on YouTube and other platforms to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The damage done to viewers is also unknown, as neither YouTube nor Linus Tech Tips have commented on the matter. It is unclear whether any viewers fell victim to the scam and lost money or if the incident was purely a disruption to the channel’s operations.

In any case, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant against phishing scams and protecting oneself online. It also highlights the need for improved security measures on popular platforms like YouTube to prevent these types of attacks from happening in the future.

This is not the first time that crypto scams have plagued YouTube. These scams have been going on for several years. The hackers usually create fake accounts that look like legitimate crypto companies or personalities, and then they use these accounts to promote their scams. Once victims fall for the fraud, they are directed to a website where they are asked to give away their personal information or send crypto to a wallet address.

YouTube has been criticized for not doing enough to prevent these scams. Despite several user reports and complaints, YouTube has been slow to act against these fake accounts. While the company has taken some steps to prevent crypto-related scams on its platform, such as banning ads for cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings, these measures have not been effective enough to stop the scammers.

In the case of Linus Tech Tips, the hackers took over the channel and used it to promote their scams to its 15 million subscribers. The fact that such a popular channel was hacked highlights the severity of the issue and the need for better security measures on YouTube.

As the popularity of crypto continues to rise, these scams will likely become more prevalent. It is up to YouTube to take more action to prevent these scams and protect its users from falling victim to these malicious activities. Users should also be cautious when it comes to crypto-related promotions and always verify the legitimacy of the accounts and websites they interact with.
