In an exciting space exploration development, NASA selected Nokia to build the first cellular network on the moon. The project will use LTE/4G technology and is part of NASA’s ambitious goal to establish a lunar base and sustain human presence on the moon by 2028.

Nokia’s Bell Labs has been granted $14.1 million for the project, which will be built in partnership with spaceflight engineering company Intuitive Machines. The 4G network will be designed to withstand the unique challenges of the moon’s environment, including extreme temperatures, radiation, and a lack of atmosphere.

The project promises to revolutionize lunar surface communications, enabling more efficient and reliable communication between lunar rovers, astronauts, and the lunar base. The network will also allow for transmitting high-definition video and data, which could significantly enhance our understanding of the moon’s geology and other scientific aspects.

Moreover, the lunar cellular network could significantly impact future space exploration missions. EEstablishing a reliable and efficient communication network on the moon could serve as a stepping stone for future missions to Mars and beyond.

This is not Nokia’s first foray into space exploration. The company has a long history of developing innovative technologies for space applications, including equipment for the Mars Rover and communication systems for the International Space Station.

Overall, the development of the lunar cellular network is a significant milestone in the history of space exploration. Nokia’s expertise in LTE/4G technology and its commitment to innovation and sustainability make it a valuable partner in this exciting project. As the world looks to the stars and beyond, Nokia and NASA are leading the way in pioneering new frontiers of space technology.
